How we source generator cost figures
Cost ranges on this site are based on public reference material across the relevant landscape. The publishers below are representative of the kind of source that informs our positioning, not an exhaustive extraction map per figure. A specific figure on a specific page is not necessarily anchored to a single named publisher.
Sources
- Manufacturer published guidance. Generac, Kohler, Cummins (Onan), Briggs & Stratton, and Champion published equipment list pricing and installation guidance. Manufacturer dealer-network published install price ranges where openly disclosed.
- Published industry references. Angi (formerly Angie's List) published cost guides, HomeAdvisor / HomeWyse published install cost data, Fixr cost reports, and named-organisation case studies from Consumer Reports generator testing.
- Practitioner contractor day-rate panels. Published licensed-electrician day-rate guidance (NECA published rates where state-by-state visible), and gas-line-installer rates from published plumber and HVAC trade associations.
- Practitioner survey data. Public Reddit r/Generac and r/HomeImprovement install-cost AMAs, Generac Owners Group community posts, and named-organisation post-installation cost write-ups.
What we deliberately do not publish
- Specific dealer rate cards. Named dealers redact quote pricing in writing. We publish band guidance, not named-dealer specific quotes.
- Predictions of post-install cost. Calculator outputs are working bands. Actual install cost depends on fuel-line distance, panel-room access, ATS placement, and local permit fees.
- Personal homeowner data. Calculators run entirely in your browser. Your inputs are not transmitted, logged, or stored.
Update cadence
Site values update only when the underlying reality changes. Triggers:
- Manufacturer announces a published list-price change
- Major hurricane / wildfire / grid-resilience season that materially shifts demand and pricing
- Material movement in published electrician / gas-line install day rates over a 12-month sample
- Updated NEC / IRC code requirements affecting generator install scope
Cosmetic date bumps are not made.
Editorial position
This site is operated by Digital Signet, an independent AI-development studio. Digital Signet does not sell generators, does not act as a Generac / Kohler / Cummins dealer, does not run a generator install practice, and does not accept paid placements from any generator manufacturer or dealer-network. See /about for the operator and the wider network.
Editorial direction is set by Oliver Wakefield-Smith. Drafts are produced via Digital Signet's autonomous AI development methodology and reviewed against the editorial framework before publication.
